Sukhothai “Dawn of Happiness” with an area of 6,596 sq km is about 427 km north of Bangkok, and was founded in 1238. It was the capital of Thailand for approximately 120 years in a period seen as a Thai golden age. Thai arts and culture prospered throughout the reign of eight kings. Under its third and most famous ruler, King Ramkhamhaeng (1279-98), rule was extended over much of present-day Thailand, and a Thai alphabet was devised. A gradual decline began in 1365 and Sukhothai became a subservient state to the rising Ayutthaya. This capital is split in two. New Sukhothai is a typical modern Thai style city and Old Sukhothai 12km to the west. Unlike Ayutthaya, where the ancient ruins are spread through the town, Sukhothai’s ruins are separate in an area of their own. Old Sukhothai Historical Park is a huge area full of ruins in various stages of restoration which is well worth a visit.
