Ranong is the first southern province on the western coast, located 568km from Bangkok. It occupies an area of 3,298 square meters and is bordered to the south by Phang Nga Province, to the east by Suratthani and Chumporn Provinces and to the west by the Andaman Sea and Myanmar. It is Thailand’s least populated province and is predominantly mountainous and heavily wooded and also known for the long rainy period lasting 8 months each year and has the highest rainfall of any Thai province. Ranong is blessed with unspoilt mangrove forests. There are two islands just offshore well worth seeing, Koh Chang and Koh Phayam. The older houses are built in the Sino-Portuguese style of Malacca and some of the downtown streets have covered arcades to shelter pedestrians from monsoon rains. The town is noted for a number of hot mineral-water springs.
