Only 67km from the Malaysian frontier and 1,473km south of Bangkok by road, Narathiwat is a small friendly town, inhabited mainly by ethnic Malays and Chinese with population of 33,000. The province is bordered to the north by Pattani, Yala to the west, Malaysia to the south and the Gulf of Thailand to the east. The province is fairly mountainous with the San Kala Kiri Mountain Range following the border between Thailand and Malaysia. Amphoe Sungai Kolok, Narathiwat’s borderland, is an important junction where the Thai southern railroad connects with another railway to the Tumpad Station in Malaysia. The province is noted as a land of gold mines and boasts extensive peat swamp forests, as well as seaside resorts along the coast of the Indian Ocean. The coastal position provides a fresh sea breeze that is great for lowering your body temperature in the blistering heat of summer. There are only 2 seasons in Narathiwat – the dry and the wet.
