A quiet and tranquil province, Nan nestles in a verdant valley in northern Thailand. About 668 km from Bangkok, 270km southeast of Chiang Rai, 318km east of Chiang Mai with population of 22,000, this provincial capital was founded in 1272 by the court of Laos. Nan is very rural with few roads and a large hill tribe population. Namely, Yao are particularly prominent with plenty of them to be found in the Nan market. There are also many Hmong, H’tin and Khamu, the last two of which are only found in Nan Province. There are plenty of temples and some remnants of the old city wall heralding a period not all that long ago when Nan was still an independent Kingdom. Nan is also one of Thailand’s best provincial museums. It is rich in teak plantations and fertile valleys, which, aside from rice, produce superb oranges. The most popular time to visit Nan is in October during the traditional boat races.
