Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat, is 259km from Bangkok and is situated on the southwest edge of the great Korat Plateau which covers most of the northeast region of Thailand (Isan) and is watered by the Mun and Chi rivers. It is the largest province in the Northeast with an area of 20,548 square kilometers with population of 203,000. Its role as gateway to the northeast was greatly strengthened by the arrival of the railway here since 1900, and it has remained an important industrial and communications center ever since. During the Vietnam War, Korat was the site of one of the large US Air Bases from where missions over Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam were flown. Today there is little of the American influence remaining.
