Lampang can be divided into two sections: a peaceful residential neighborhood of winding narrow lanes to the north of the river and a bustling commercial district on the south bank. Within the town are numerous excellent examples of Mynmarese temple architecture, streets of old Chinese shop houses and warehouses, remains of ancient fortifications, beautiful teak houses in large gardens and fine river scenery. It was previously known as ‘City of the Roosters’. That is why you can find a statue of a huge white rooster in the center of the town. Horse carriage is the symbol of the province and it is the only town in Thailand, which still uses the horse carriage as a form of transport. Horse-drawn carriages are available for tourists at a stand outside the government house, although some are usually waiting at the train station. It is also known as the world’s only training school for baby elephants.
