With its population of 52,000, Chonburi was probably founded in the 14c and is now an important commercial centre and fishing port which is about 80km southeast of Bangkok. It is also the gateway to various coastal towns in the East. It is one of those provincial capitals where a bus ride through town is more than enough. Chonburi is best known for its seaside destinations and also a major industrial and agricultural producer, with sugarcane and tapioca fields particularly plentiful in this region of Thailand. Its major claim to fame is the famous Pattaya Beach, 50km south of Chonburi. The most important monument in Chonburi is Wat Yai Intharam. Founded in the late Ayutthaya period and raised to the rank of a royal monastery in 1975, this wat is chiefly notable for its wall paintings, the earliest of which are thought to date from the late Ayutthaya period.
