Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Malaysian state of Sabah. Located on the north-eastern coast of Borneo Island, it is a paradise which attracts nature lovers from all around the world for its unique mountain climbing experience and pure countryside. The city can be visited all year round, but the best time is from April to June when there is less rain.
The city's major draw, Kinabalu National Park, is Malaysia's first world heritage site and one of the world's most important biological sites. Located around 80 km off the city, it is home to Mount Kinabalu (Gunung Kinabalu), a staggering 4kms high stony peak which offers a great climbing opportunity - without need for mountaineering equipments, through the forest with an exotic collection of plant and wildlife such as the gigantic Rafflesia plants and the orangutan. For people who are not interested in climbing, the park also provides an opportunity to bath at Poring Hot Springs or bird-watch on the extraordinary Canopy Walk.
Beside the park, the city also has beautiful tropical islands within reach, such as Tunku Abdul Rahman Island Park which is located only 10-20 minutes by boat from Kota Kinabalu city. Its 5 beautiful tropical islands, namely Gaya, Mamutik, Manukan, Sapi, and Sulug are known among locals and tourists as the great places to go for picnics, diving, and nature walks. Also, Kota Kinabalu is the gateway to Sabah's many tourist spots -- the world-class diving destination Sipadan, and one of only four orangutan sanctuaries in the world, Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sandakan.
