The Cambodian city, Phnom Penh is located in the area where Tonle Sap River meets with Mekhong River in the south-eastern part of the Cambodia. At the first look, it will give you a sense of handy-size peaceful town, but in fact, this is the capital city and the most important economic and administrative centre of the country. The city has been developed from a town with a bitter past, into one of the famous destinations for travellers from all around the world, largely known for the lavishly decorated royal palace and the beautiful scenery of the river bank, and as one of the gateways to the majestic Angkor.
Though the city is quite small in size, there are a number of attractions that give visitors impressive sightseeing experiences all day long. Starting from the Royal Palace, this palace was constructed over a century ago to serve as the residence of the King of Cambodia. The King still lives here, but much of the palace including the Throne Hall (Preah Timeang Tevea Vinicchay) and the renowned Silver Pagoda, are open to the public. Just next to the Royal Palace is the National Museum displaying comprehensive collections of Angkorian arts - the best place for preparing yourself before going on the life-time visit at the Angkor in Siem Reap. Or you can enjoy observing the local's peaceful living way at Sisowath Quay - a pleasant riverfront boulevard with nice cafes and bars.
On a more miserably heart stopping side, Phonm Penh is the place that can give you traces of the cruel Khmer Rouge regime. Some of the horrific remnants can be seen at the infamous Choeung Ek Memorial (the Killing Fields), and Toul Sleng Genocide Museum - a school that turned into prison where thousands of innocent people were tortured and killed.
